THE MAGIC OF THE DOTS
KARLIE KLOSS TALKS ABOUT THE FASCINATING QUALITIES OF GOOD GIRL DOT DRAMA, THE NEW PERFUME BY CAROLINA HERRERA.
You have collaborated with Carolina Herrera de Baez in the creation of the new edition. Can you talk a bit about the artistic process behind Good Girl Dot Drama?
It was a truly amazing experience getting to work so closely with Carolina Herrera de Baez on this project. She is someone whom I deeply admire, a woman of many talents. Her creativity and unique vision were extremely valuable throughout this process, as we went through the Carolina Herrera archives and carefully selected several inspirations forGood Girl Dot Drama. We wanted this project to reflect the giamour, elegance and mystery that the brand has always been known for. We also wanted the bottle to stand out and be an accessory on its own. We landed on the polka dot design, because it is so eyecatching and classically Carolina Herrera!
Why did you choose the Polka Dot design for the new bottle?
Polka dots have a lot of significance within the Carolina Herrera brand. It’s one of its signature patterns, they were actually used to design the brand’s first perfume in 1988! For me, polka dots have always been a timeless fashion staple — they can be dressed up or down, and strike a balance between being classic and modern.
How would you define glamour?
For me, glamour is ali about expressing your personal style in a way that feels natural and effortless. whether you’re wearing a t-shirt or a bali gown, when you’re confident and comfortable in your own sense of style, it’s incredibly powerful. İn the latest Good Girl campaign, I play a femme fatale who embodies mystery, sensuality, and above ali else, glamour. İt was a fun, empowering role.
Since you started your career, the industry has götten very global and some of the mystery has been lost. However, connectivity has also brought many advances.
It’s been fascinating to watch technology’s impact on the fashion industry and how things have evolved. Social media has helped democratize fashion and beauty in exciting ways, by allowing more people, brands and influencers to become involved in the industry and share their unique perspectives and ideas. Global connectivity is extremely beneficial, and allows for people everywhere to share their voice, build and scale businesses, and create social impact on both a local and global scale. Nevertheless, while it’s amazing to be so connected, I also think it’s important to take a break from your phone and technology every now and then, and be present in the moment.
In the Polka Dot campaign, you exude the confidence actresses like Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich or Lauren Bacall used to emanate onscreen. How can we boost our confidence? Confidence is one of the most important qualities a woman can have. Confidence is an attitude and a mindset that starts from within — it’s about accepting yourself and being comfortable with who you are. For me, I feel my most confident when l’m taking çare of myself and doing things that I love — whether that’s exercising, meditating, or spending time with family and friends.
How can a perfume bring the sense of empowerment?
Perfumes are an invisible part of our personal style and have a powerful effect on how others see and remember us. Spraying on Good Girl empowers me and gives me an immediate confidence boost. The contrast between the light of the White Flowers and the darkness of the Tonka Beans and the Cacao not only smells wonderful, but captures the essence of the campaign, which is ali about embracing our duality.
A few years ago, you went back to university; and in 2015 you started Kode with Klossy, a free two-week summer camp course where giriş aged between 13 and 18 are introduced to computer coding. Why is it important to help giriş access this career? And why did you decide to go back to school?
I have always been interested in math and science, so I decided to take my first coding class back in 2014 to learn more about the technology 3 that was changing the world around me. I quickly realized how creative and collaborative coding is, but I also saw that not enough women were learning this important life skill. That experience inspired me to start my coding organization, Kode With Klossy, and four years later, we have built and scaled an amazing community of young women who have become empowered through code and technology. This past summer was our biggest yet — we had 50 free summer camps in 25 cities across the country where our scholars learned HTML/CSS, Ruby, JavaScript and Apple’s programing language, Swift! Investing in STEM education is an investment in our future.
Our scholars are the future change makers of our world, and giving them the right tools and opportunities will empower them for success. Our Kode With Klossy scholars are brilliant, hard-working young women, and I can’t wait to see where their journeys in code will take them.
What are your happiest smell memories?
Growing up, I loved to bake with my Gram, and my favorite recipe was her famous ginger snap cookies. My family and I stili make the cookies for holidays and special occasions, and the sweet cinnamon smell always reminds me of those special moments shared with my Gram.
Many people go into modeling every year but very few get to where you are. Did you have any role model when you started?
I’ve always looked up to models like Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington, who have used their voices and platforms to build businesses and raise awareness for issues they çare about. Growing up, I never anticipated that I would work in fashion, so seeing these incredible women use their careers to pursue other passions really resonated with me. Carolina Herrera has also had an incredible influence on me. When I first met her early on in my career, she was so personable, strong and elegant. It’s a dream come true to be able to work with her so closely today!
What makes a perfume timeless?
For me, a timeless perfume is a fragrance that is both poeerful and delicate. Good Girl strikes that perfect balance beteeen its luminous and darker notes, and has a memorable lasting scent. It’s also a true reflection of Carolina Herrera and Carolina Herrera de Baez’s personalities and vision: sophisticated, authentic and empoeering.
