Carolina Herrera de Baez, sometimes known as “Carolina Jr.”, talks about working for mom, Carolina Herrera, and the Carolina Herrera House’s new perfume Good Girl.

Carolina Herrera de Baez was the first of Carolina Herrera’s four daughters to becomeinvolvedin the fashion empire. She says it happened by chance and circumstance, but to look at her already 18-year trajectory one might sayit was fate that led her to collaborate with the perfume line.

For Herrera, working with her motheris “cozy and comforting”. But it works so well for the Herrera women because they arein different places, have different roles and know that they can “trust each other 100 percent”.

What is the secret behind a good fragrance?

The secret behind a good fragranceis ensuring it has a unique touch. İt can be very hard for fragrances to endurein an industry where companies launch new fragrances every six months. However, ifthe fragrance has something special it will attract loyal consumers and withstand time.

What would you say is the main difference between men’s and women’s fragrances?

The difference between men’s and women’s fragrances ali boıls down to individual taste and the preference. İn western countries, sweet and floral fragrances seem to be more popular amongst women, while woody ones attract more men. Nowadays those barriers are becoming blurred and many women are using male fragrances and vice-versa.

What inspires you for the idea of a new perfume?

I find long plane trips a great place to think up ideas. It’s a place there you can relax and be disconnected from everything. I thinktheinspiration comes from what you listen to, read or see around you. İt can be a flower, a colour, phrasingin a book, a melody or a simple memory. I’ve learnt to believe in my first instincts and to not believe everything that is said of me.

What is perfume?

Perfume is ethereal; you can’t touch it, it doesn’t exist. With fragrance, you have memories, but you don’t have things to measure it by. It’sintangible, really. You’re selling dreams, you’re selling emotions, you’re selling memories.

What is your favourite ingredient?

Jasmine is an important flower for me personally, for the Carolina Herrera house and I thinkfor my mother also. I can walk down the Street and smell jasmine and think of my mother, for example. It’s not a particular moment I recall, just her. When I was younger my mother would wearjasmine oıl. She used to mix that with tuberose oıl and that combination became her very first perfume. I remember growing up with that scent. And when I started working in the perfume industry, I always used white flowers as a nod to thejasmine in everything.

How do you choose a perfume?

You should love the scent. I actually don’t even believe in wearing a scent for summer, winter, day, night, wedding ete. Ifyou love a scent and it agrees with you and it makes you feel good, you can wear it whenever – to bed, out in the evening, to the gym.

How is working with your mother?

It’s great, it’s really fun working with family although you have the pressure, you don’t want to do a bad job but one of the great thingsis that we’re not alike; l’m not a elone of her – that would be pretty boring. We can argue; she can make me see her point of view or I can make her see something in a different way.

How does your new perfume Good Girl appeal to you personally?

I loved the idea ofthe ‘Good Girl/Bad Cîrl’ duality from the beginning. Being able to explore those two aspects of the woman was what first interested me about this project. I think ıt’s real, andit’s a fun way to express femininity. Because no woman is just plainly good or bad, the ideais that we can be both.

Are there ways in which you identify yourself with Good Girl and its messages?

Personally I think ali women, including myself, have that duality inside them. I can relate to the idea that we’re good, but occasionally we need to bejust a little ‘naughty’ to get what we want!

What characteristics of the Good Girl do you personify?

The same ones as every woman. The Good Girl is a woman who is complex and full of the contradictions that make us interesting. Because life would be boring if we were only one thing, wouldn’t it?

Why was Mario Testino right for this campaign?

As well as being a great photographer, Mario understands women. He brings out the beştin them. Whenever we do a launch of any kind at the House of Herrera, we want to capture the best of the woman behind it. And Mario getsit. He gets the project, he gets Carolina Herrera, he gets ali of it. Why did we choose him? He loves women and takes beautiful photographs. It’s a no-brainer!

How does Karlie Kloss represent the Good Girl?

She’s got a very wholesome side to her, but at the same time she can be quite cheeky. I saw that while we were shooting the TV advert. She’s approachable and she’s fun and she has a great smile. She’s good and she gives you confidence, but then she has this mischievous side to her as well, which is a lot of fun.

What inspired the unique shape of the bottle?

The bottle is based on a heel, because ali women feel powerful when they’re wearing heels. The high heel is a physical expression offeminine confidence, sensuality and self-assurance.

You speak of the high heel as an expression of feminine power. How so?

It’s an empowering thing to look beautiful, to stand taller, to make animpact when you enter a room. And that’s something that an elegant high heel gives you. Although, of course, ıt’s just another element of what makes a Good Girl who sheis.

Why is it important to inspire the Good Girl in every girl?

I think it’s important to inspire both the good and the ‘bad’. Good is great, but knowing when to be a little bad sometimes is also important. I think you have to have a bit of both, to embrace both sides of you, and that’s the inspirational message behind Good Girl.

What does Good Girl bring to the existing collection of Carolina Herrera Fragrances?

This project goes back to the essence of Carolina Herrera andintroduces a new woman.

The House of Herrera has a very strong idea of ıtself and I think this project expresses that perfectly. The House of Herrera has a very clearly defined look and stylein fashion, accessories and fragrance – classic simplicity and unpretentious, understated elegance.

Is Good Girl a radical departure for the House from your perspective?

It’s new, but it’s definitely part of the House of Herrera story.

İn fact, I think she’s the perfect House of Herrera woman. We always create a woman when we create a new perfume and this woman was a lot of fun to bring to life. This fragrance plays with the classic archetype of a woman, but gives it a House of Herrera twist.

Why is this the right time for Good Girl at the House of Herrera?

It’s always a good time for a new project! With every new project we want to create or enhance the concept of the Carolina Herrera woman, and this one really inspired us to create something unique and relevant to women.

İn that sense, Good Girl is the ultimate expression ofthe Herrera woman today.

How was Good Girl born? What were the thoughts and feelings that led to your creating Good Girl?

İt was a stimulating Creative process, which opened up a lot of doors and gave us a lot of different things to explore. When you researchit theidea of the femme fatal, the duality of the woman is something that’s always been played out in art, literatüre and movies. This woman has been imagined throughouttime, beginningwith Eve.

What city inspired the Good Girl fragrance?

New York inspires every Carolina Herrera fragrance,it’s always therein the background. And this particularwoman is so New York. You can find a lot of Good Girişin NewYork! But there’s also definitely onein every corner of the world. That’s the beauty ofthis project: the idea behind Good Girl is universal.

You present Good Girl as very much a part of the Carolina Herrera universe; Karlie wears Carolina Herrera, of course, and you talk about the fashion. This isn’t the usual approach to introducing a designer fragrance. Tell us more about this.
